NEW YORK, New York - U.S. stocks ended Friday's session broadly lower, pressured by a sharp spike in oil prices and a plunge in technology shares, particularly in the artificial intelligence sector.
The Standard and Poor's 500 fell 84.62 points, or 1.09 percent, to close at 7,659.44. The benchmark index traded as high as 7,756.84 and as low as 7,631.77 during the day, with volume of 3.31 billion shares. Its 52-week range stands at 6,316.91 to 7,844.52.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 175.28 points, or 0.34 percent, to finish at 52,002.41. The blue-chip index's session range was 51,847.94 to 52,582.32, on volume of 487.438 million shares. Its 52-week range is 45,057.28 to 54,744.33.
The Nasdaq Composite bore the brunt of the selling, tumbling 572.99 points, or 2.14 percent, to close at 26,140.03. The tech-heavy index traded between 26,023.10 and 26,674.66, with volume of 8.250 billion shares. Its 52-week range is 20,690.25 to 27,722.75.
Market participants pointed to a surge in crude oil prices as a key driver of the risk-off mood, with rising energy costs stoking concerns about inflation and corporate margins. The selling was especially intense in AI-linked names, which had led the market higher for much of the year.
U.S. Dollar Slips Against Most Major Currencies Friday, Edges Higher Versus Yen
The U.S. dollar weakened against most major currencies in Friday's foreign exchange trading, though it managed a modest gain against the Japanese yen, according to the latest quotes.
The euro rose against the greenback, with EUR-USD trading at 1.1232, up 0.11 percent. The move extended the single currency's recent strength as traders continued to assess the outlook for both the eurozone and U.S. economies.
The British pound posted a larger advance, with GBP-USD at 1.3319, up 0.33 percent. Sterling was among the day's better performers as it held above the 1.33 mark.
The Australian dollar also gained ground Friday, with AUD-USD at 0.6942, up 0.30 percent. The commodity-linked currency benefited from the broader risk-on tone seen across global markets.
The dollar weakened against the Canadian dollar as well, with USD-CAD at 1.4152, down 0.24 percent. The loonie's rise came alongside firmer commodity prices.
The Swiss franc also strengthened versus the greenback, with USD-CHF at 0.8244, down 0.28 percent, as investors continued to favor the safe-haven currency.
The dollar's softer tone had one exception: the yen. USD-JPY edged up to 158.07, a gain of 0.04 percent, as the Japanese currency remained under pressure despite the broader weakness in the greenback.
Taken together, the session's moves painted a picture of a generally softer dollar, with only the yen failing to capitalize on the greenback's retreat.
