JERUSALEM, Israel: Israel's election commission has found no evidence of fraud in last week's parliamentary election, rejecting claims by Prime Minister Benjamin After the results are formally certified, President Isaac Herzog will begin consultations with all parties elected to parliament from November 4.
Netanyahu and his supporters have alleged that the results were manipulated.
Netanyahu and his allies have repeatedly alleged, without providing evidence, that Arab-led parties had "stolen" the election, possibly with help from foreign actors.
The election results showed that Netanyahu's religious-nationalist bloc had lost its parliamentary majority, while Arab-led parties made significant gains.
"The review found no evidence of irregularities that compromised the integrity of the election or affected its results," the election commission said in a statement on November 4.
Dean Livne, acting director of the election commission, said the investigation had examined every complaint individually and carefully. However, it found no evidence supporting claims that the election results were invalid.
Livne said the results, formally certified on November 4, accurately represented voters' choices.
A separate investigation by Israel's Shin Bet intelligence service into possible foreign interference in the election is still underway, according to an election commission spokesperson.
The commission has acknowledged that allegations of foreign attempts to influence the election are serious. However, it has said there is no indication that any such activity changed the outcome.
On November 1, the commission's head, Supreme Court Justice Noam Sohlberg, said that even if suspicions of foreign interference were proven, they would not affect the overall credibility of the election process or its results.
After the results are formally certified, President Isaac Herzog will begin consultations with all parties elected to parliament from November 4.
After two days of meetings, Herzog will select the candidate he believes has the best chance of forming a coalition government. The likely choices are Netanyahu and his main rival, opposition leader Gadi Eisenkot.
The president's decision will begin a period of negotiations that could last several weeks as political parties attempt to secure enough support to form a government.
Neither Netanyahu's religious-nationalist bloc nor Eisenkot's allied parties won the parliamentary majority needed to govern independently.
The election outcome has created several possible political arrangements. One possibility is an alliance between Netanyahu and Eisenkot, despite their rivalry. Another is a coalition between Eisenkot and some Arab-led parties, which would increase their representation in parliament.
The negotiations could prove difficult because both leading political groups need support from parties outside their existing alliances to reach the required majority.
If neither Netanyahu nor Eisenkot forms a coalition government, Israel could be forced to hold another parliamentary election early next year.
