Kolkata (West Bengal) [India], May 30 (ANI): The All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) on Saturday condemned the alleged attack on its national general secretary and MP Abhishek Banerjee during his visit to Sonarpur, accusing the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of encouraging violence and contributing to a decline in law and order in West Bengal.
In a post on X, the party said the incident exposed what it described as the 'true face' of BJP politics and raised serious concerns about public safety.
'The true face of BJP Bengal's politics stands exposed. The attack on our National General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee today is yet another reminder of how rapidly law and order has deteriorated under this shameless regime. If a sitting Opposition MP can be targeted in broad daylight, what hope is there for ordinary citizens?' the party said.
The AITC also questioned whether such incidents reflected the BJP's claims of good governance.
'Is this the BJP's idea of democracy? Is this the 'good governance' that PM Modi never stops boasting about? Violence, intimidation and political hooliganism have become the defining features of the BJP's rule. Those responsible may enjoy political patronage today, but they cannot escape accountability forever,' the party said.
'Bengal is watching. India is watching. The world is watching,' it added.
In another post on X, the AITC said Banerjee continued with his visit despite the alleged attack and met the family of Sanju Karmakar.
'Staying true to his word, Abhishek Banerjee refused to abandon the grieving family of Sanju Karmakar. Even after a vicious attack by BJP-backed miscreants, our National General Secretary chose not to turn back. Instead, he stood beside a family devastated by an unimaginable loss allegedly inflicted by BJP-backed hooligans. That is the difference between politics driven by compassion and politics driven by hatred,' the party said.
The party also targeted West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, alleging that the incident reflected a style of politics based on 'intimidation, violence and vendetta.'
'@SuvenduWB, today's events have once again exposed the kind of politics you preside over - one rooted in intimidation, violence and vendetta,' it said.
Earlier in the day, the Trinamool Congress alleged that Abhishek Banerjee was 'lynched and attacked by a few BJP supporters' while visiting the family of a person whom the party claimed had been murdered by BJP workers.
Banerjee alleged that there had been an attempt on his life and said he would approach the courts over the incident.
'They wanted to kill me... The whole incident has been captured on camera. We will definitely let the high court know about this. We will also let the governor know about this... I will definitely move to court,' Abhishek Banerjee told reporters.
He further alleged BJP involvement in the attack.
'It's all BJP-sponsored. Look what they have done. This is their example of democracy. It hasn't even been a month, and the police are nowhere to be seen,' he said.
According to the Trinamool Congress, the incident took place when Banerjee visited Sonarpur to meet families affected by alleged post-poll violence. (ANI)
