SAN FRANCISCO, California: Microsoft and Nvidia are expected to unveil the first Windows personal computers powered by Nvidia-designed processors this week, marking a major step in the effort to expand AI-focused computing beyond traditional chipmakers.
According to a report by Axios, the new computers will feature Nvidia chips as their primary processors and are expected to be introduced at Taiwan's Computex Taipei trade show which runs from Tuesday to Friday this week, and Microsoft's Build developer conference in San Francisco on Tuesday and Wednesday.
The report, citing sources familiar with the plans, said Nvidia-powered devices will be released under Microsoft's Surface brand as well as by other manufacturers, including Dell.
Neither Microsoft nor Nvidia immediately responded to requests for comment.
The expected launch comes as Microsoft continues its push toward more power-efficient, Arm-based computing platforms. However, efforts to shift away from traditional processors have yet to generate a major sales surge for Windows devices.
Apple, Microsoft's primary rival in the personal computer market, introduced updated MacBook models powered by its latest M5-series chips in March.
Hints about the upcoming announcement emerged when the official X accounts of Windows, Nvidia and Arm posted teasers referring to "A new era of PC." The posts also included what appeared to be geographic coordinates pointing to Taipei, where Computex is being held.
It was first reported in 2023 that Nvidia was developing central processing units designed to run Microsoft's Windows operating system using technology from Arm.
The move would place Nvidia more directly into the PC processor market, which has long been dominated by Intel and AMD. Qualcomm currently supplies Arm-based processors for Windows laptops.
In addition to the new hardware, Microsoft is also expected to introduce software designed to enable AI agents to perform tasks locally on Windows computers, according to the Axios report.
