Balen Shah insisted New Delhi and Kathmandu had encroached on each others territory but called for talks
Nepalese Prime Minister Balen Shah reignited a long-running border dispute between his country and its large southern neighbor India, adding fuel to the fire by saying the United Kingdom and China have to be at the talks.
Shah, who was elected last year following the massive 'Gen Z' protests against corruption that swept the country, said on Sunday, "Not only has India encroached on Nepal's land, but Nepal has also encroached on India's land in multiple places."
He said that the disputes over Lipulekh, Limpiyadhura and Kala Pani would be resolved through diplomatic dialogue.
While he sounded reconciliatory in calling for talks, he added that Kathmandu has spoken with not only India and China - whose Tibet region borders the disputed zone - about the issue but also with the UK government.
"Our view is that the UK should also take an interest, as the issue dates back to the period when the British left the region," Shah said. Britain ruled India for nearly 200 years, until its independence in 1947, and is still bitterly remembered for its brutality and exploitation, particularly the partitioning of the territories under the Raj into India and Pakistan.
"The whole problem arose because of ambiguity in the 1816 treaty between the British and Nepal," S.D. Muni, Professor Emeritus at the School of International Studies at New Delhi's Jawaharlal Nehru University, told RT.
He said Shah's statement should be seen as more positive than negative as it shows a shift in Nepal's approach to the issue.
India had said earlier last month that it remains open to constructive interaction with Nepal on all issues in the bilateral relationship, including on resolving agreed-upon outstandingboundary issuesthrough dialogue and diplomacy.
Meanwhile, media reports said that Rabi Lamichhane, the president of Shah's Rashtriya Swatantra Party, will make a five-day official visit to India starting Monday at the invitation of its ruling Bharatiya Janata Party.
