ÉVIAN-LES-BAINS, France: The United States may soon bring back sanctions on Russian oil shipments after President Donald Trump and other leaders at the Group of Seven summit on June 16 decided to refocus attention on the war in Ukraine.
In recent weeks, the conflict with Iran had taken attention away from Ukraine, but after announcing a deal to end the three-and-a-half-month war in the Gulf, Trump said he now wants to turn his focus back to Ukraine.
He said Iran would soon be "in the rearview mirror."
When asked if he would restore sanctions on Russia that had been relaxed to help lower oil prices, Trump said the restrictions could be reintroduced now that more oil is flowing through the Strait of Hormuz.
"Soon we'll be able to do that because the oil is now flowing," Trump said. "We're in a position to do that soon."
In March, the U.S. had temporarily eased some sanctions on certain Russian oil shipments as oil prices rose sharply. This relief was extended as the Middle East conflict continued.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy joined G7 leaders for discussions on the war, though the meeting lasted only about 75 minutes.
Zelenskyy said Ukraine is committed to peace, while Russia is not serious and is playing games with world leaders. He added that all G7 countries are united in their support for Ukraine.
He also said the leaders backed Ukraine's need for more Patriot missile systems and discussed increasing their production through licensing. These systems help defend against Russian ballistic missile attacks on Ukraine's cities and power infrastructure.
As the U.S. under Trump has reduced its aid to Ukraine, France and other European countries have become the main providers of military and financial support to Kyiv.
At the summit, Trump downplayed how much the war affects the U.S., but expressed concern over the number of deaths, calling the situation "ridiculous" and saying he would do what he could.
At the same time, the United Kingdom announced new sanctions targeting the "shadow fleet" Russia uses to transport oil and gas, as well as financial networks that help it avoid Western sanctions. The targeted ships include vessels recently bought by Russia to move liquefied natural gas from its Arctic LNG 2 project.
Trump has been frustrated by the lack of progress toward ending the war between Russia and Ukraine.
Just hours before the summit, Russia launched hundreds of drones and dozens of missiles at Ukraine's largest cities, killing 11 people and damaging a religious site.
These attacks came after Zelenskyy and Russian President Vladimir Putin had separate phone calls with Trump on June 14, which was Trump's 80th birthday.
During his 2024 campaign, Trump said he could end the war within 24 hours of returning to office, but talks have slowed, and he has admitted it has been much harder than expected.
On June 16, Ukraine officially began talks to join the European Union, starting a long process that will require major political reforms even as the war continues.
Ukraine sees EU membership as a way to ensure long-term security after the war. Its strongest guarantee would be joining NATO, but the Trump administration has said that it will not happen, and some countries are concerned about Ukraine joining while the war is still ongoing.
