SYDNEY, Australia: A male diver was injured in a shark attack off the coast of Tasmania on July 18, police said. This is the latest in a series of shark incidents in Australian waters.

The 31-year-old man was diving about 50 meters offshore near Adventure Bay on Bruny Island when he was bitten. The incident happened at around 9:10 a.m., and the shark was believed to be a two-meter-long broadnose sevengill shark.

In a statement, Police Inspector Darren Latham said the man managed to return to shore on his own and was helped by other divers.

The diver suffered injuries to his forearm, but they were not life-threatening. He was flown to hospital and was reported to be in stable condition.

Police said there were no further sightings of the shark in the area. Bruny Island is a remote part of Tasmania, located about a one-hour flight from Melbourne, which is around 445 kilometers away. About 40 percent of the island consists of wilderness or protected land.

In June, a shark attack in Sydney left a 35-year-old woman critically injured and led to a safety review of popular beaches.

Also in June, a man died after being attacked by a shark while fishing off the coast of Western Australia. In another incident in May, a 39-year-old man was killed in a shark attack while fishing on the Great Barrier Reef in Queensland. A week earlier, a 38-year-old man was fatally attacked near an island off Perth in Western Australia.

In January, dozens of beaches along Australia's east coast were closed after four shark attacks occurred within two days.

Although shark encounters are still rare, a Reuters analysis of data from the Australian Shark Incident Database showed a steady increase over time.

The data indicated that Australia has averaged nearly 29 incidents per year over the past decade, compared to about 16 per year annually in the 2000s.
