BOISE, Idaho: Micron Technology plans to invest US$10 billion over the next decade in a new research laboratory in Boise, Idaho, aimed at advancing memory technologies, developing compute systems and supporting future chip manufacturing.
The semiconductor company said August 20 that Micron Research Labs will bring together customers, academia, government and the broader semiconductor ecosystem to pursue technological breakthroughs.
Micron expects to break ground on the facility in 2027. The lab will be able to host hundreds of researchers, as well as international conferences and workshops.
The investment comes as Micron and other major memory-chip manufacturers, including Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix, benefit from surging demand generated by the rapid expansion of artificial intelligence infrastructure.
Growing adoption of AI workloads and infrastructure buildout have increased demand for high-bandwidth memory, or HBM. The technology rapidly feeds data to AI accelerators and has become a critical component of modern computing infrastructure.
The new Boise lab will be connected with Micron's existing research and technology operations across the United States, Europe, Japan, India, Singapore and Taiwan.
The $10 billion investment builds on more than $250 billion that Micron has separately committed to manufacturing and research and development across the United States.
The Trump administration has prioritized expanding domestic semiconductor manufacturing to reduce foreign dependence, boost economic output, and maintain the country's lead in the AI race.
