BEIJING, Aug. 22 (Xinhua) -- Here are the latest Chinese sports headlines from the past week:
1. China's Wang Manyu wins women's singles title at WTT Europe Smash
China's Wang Manyu claimed the women's singles title at the World Table Tennis Europe Smash Sweden on August 16, as China wrapped up the tournament with two titles, in women's singles and mixed doubles.
In an all-Chinese women's singles final, Wang Manyu overcame Wang Yidi 4-2 after a hard-fought six-game contest.
The 2026 WTT Europe Smash Sweden was held in the city of Malmo, which hosted the event for the second consecutive year. The tournament featured men's and women's singles, men's and women's doubles, and mixed doubles competitions.
China's Lin Shidong and Kuai Man won the mixed doubles title on August 14. Chinese players were eliminated in the men's singles round of 16, while China's men's and women's doubles teams both exited in the quarterfinals.
2. China's Li Shifeng crashes out of badminton World Championships
China's Li Shifeng lost a hard-fought three-game match against Japan's Kodai Naraoka in round of 16 of the men's singles event at the badminton World Championships on August 20.
Li squandered a one-game advantage to go down 13-21, 23-21, 21-11. Defending champion Shi Yuqi and Weng Hongyang were both eliminated in earlier rounds.
In women's singles, third-seeded Wang Zhiyi of China fought her way into the quarterfinals, overcoming ninth-seeded P. V. Sindhu 21-11, 15-21, 21-17 in an 88-minute thriller.
Her compatriot Han Yue also advanced after a hard-fought three-game victory by beating South Korea's Kim Ga-eun 21-19, 20-22, 21-14. Former Olympic champion Chen Yufei exited, beaten by Thailand's Pornpawee Chochuwong 15-21, 25-23, 21-17.
3. China reaches FIBA U18 Asia Cup semis, secures U19 World Cup spot
China beat the Philippines 117-103 on August 21 to advance to the FIBA U18 Asia Cup semifinals and qualify for next year's FIBA U19 Basketball World Cup.
Shooting from beyond the arc set the tone for China's win, with 17 of 33 from 3-point range. Four Chinese players scored in double figures, led by Wang Zichao's 25 points on six 3-pointers. Chen Yuxiu had 23 points, while Hao Xuan and Zhang Yizhaojie added 16 apiece.
China went 11 of 21 from beyond the arc in the first half to build a 59-45 halftime lead.
After the break, China made four 3-pointers in a row to extend its lead to 22 points and had a 19-point advantage heading into the final frame.
As China's offensive efficiency dropped and some errors were committed in the final period, the Philippines began to claw back but came no closer than 14 points.
The FIBA U19 World Cup will be held in Pardubice, Czech Republic from June 26 to July 4, 2027.
4. Hua Tian claims record Chinese finish at eventing worlds
Alex Hua Tian produced the best World Championship result by a Chinese rider with a 12th-place finish aboard Chicko at the FEI Eventing World Championships in Aachen, Germany, on August 16.
Hua and the 16-year-old gelding finished on 37.3 penalties, improving significantly over the three disciplines after sitting 37th following the opening dressage competition.
The pair scored 32.5 penalties in dressage before climbing 15 places in the cross-country phase, completing the course without jumping penalties and adding only 4.8 time penalties.
A clear show jumping round lifted Hua another 10 places to 12th overall.
The 36-year-old will head to the Asian Games seeking to defend the individual and team titles he won in Hangzhou in 2023.
5. China loses to New Zealand in men's basketball warmup game
China lost 84-77 to New Zealand in a men's basketball warmup game for the FIBA World Cup qualifiers held in Foshan, south China's Guangdong Province on August 17, with the host out-rebounded by the Tall Blacks.
China had three players score in double figures, with Liao Sanning leading the team with 17 points. Jiao Boqiao and Hu Jinqiu added 14 and 13 points, respectively.
China finished its warm-up series with one win and two losses and will resume its World Cup qualifying campaign later this month. China will visit Qatar on August 27 before hosting Lebanon on August 31.
