NEW YORK CITY, New York: Johnson & Johnson's experimental prostate cancer drug produced substantial declines in a key cancer marker and shrank or eliminated tumors in some patients in an early-stage trial, the company said.
The once-daily oral drug, JNJ-6143, was tested in patients with advanced prostate cancer who had already received multiple treatments.
Among 31 evaluable patients receiving the 50-milligram dose, 77 percent experienced a decline of at least 50 percent in prostate-specific antigen, or PSA, levels, a blood marker used to monitor prostate cancer.
PSA levels fell by at least 90 percent in 48 percent of patients.
Among patients whose tumors could be measured through imaging, 69 percent had a confirmed complete or partial response.
J&J gained access to the experimental treatment through its US$3.05 billion acquisition of Halda Therapeutics last year.
The drug uses a novel approach that selectively kills cancer cells by interfering with a protein they require to survive.
"It adds a new mechanism of action to J&J's prostate cancer portfolio," a Johnson & Johnson spokesperson said.
Common side effects in the trial included nausea and elevated cholesterol and triglyceride levels. One patient stopped treatment because of adverse effects.
The results were presented at the European Society for Medical Oncology Congress.
