AMMAN, Jordan: Jordanian security forces have arrested three men suspected of carrying out a deadly attack on a Greek Orthodox Church in the southern city of Karak. The attack killed nine people and wounded more than 20 others during a funeral on Friday.
The Public Security Directorate said the arrests were made on October 26 after a shootout with the suspects at dawn. All three men were wounded during the operation, but no security personnel were injured.
Karak, situated south of the capital, Amman, has a minority Christian population. The attack took place inside a Greek Orthodox Church while a funeral was being held. Three men were reported to have taken part in the assault.
No group has claimed responsibility for the attack, and authorities have not publicly linked it to any armed organization.
Jordan's Interior Minister Mazen Al-Faraya identified the three arrested men as those responsible for the attack. He said security forces had tracked the suspects after the incident and carried out an operation to capture them.
"The security services have fulfilled their duties, resulting in the capture of those who carried out this terrorist act," he said in a telephone interview with state television channel Al-Mamlaka.
Al-Faraya said the suspects had resisted arrest but were eventually overpowered and taken into custody. He added that all three had suffered serious injuries during the confrontation.
The minister also said the suspects had been identified soon after the attack. Security agencies had used all available resources to locate and arrest them.
The arrests came three days after the deadly assault, which shocked the local community and raised concerns over security at religious sites.
Jordan has a Muslim-majority population, while Christians form a small minority. Greek Orthodox Christians are among the country's established Christian communities.
King Abdullah II ordered the authorities to take strong action against those responsible for the attack. He called for an "iron fist" response against people he described as outlaws of Islam and those seeking to weaken national unity.
The king's statement stressed the need to protect Jordanian unity and prevent attempts to divide the country.
Authorities have not released further details about the suspects or explained what may have motivated the attack. Investigations are expected to establish the circumstances surrounding the shooting and determine whether anyone else was involved.
