BANGKOK, Thailand: Heavy overnight rain triggered flash floods across Phuket, one of Thailand's major tourist destinations, inundating roads and residential areas, officials said.
All three districts of the southern island province, including the capital, Phuket City, were affected. Water levels began to fall by late morning, but several low-lying areas remained flooded, and officials advised small vehicles to stay away.
Romdon Hayiawae, the provincial deputy governor, said some parts of Phuket had also experienced mudslides. Officials were working to clear mud and debris to keep it from entering canals and blocking waterways.
Photos and videos shared on social media showed floodwaters flowing into residential neighborhoods and covering roads, making some routes impassable. Several vehicles were partly buried under piles of mud and rocks left behind by the floods.
About 100 households were affected. There were no reports of deaths or injuries, Romdon said.
The Thai Meteorological Department warned that heavy and continuous rain could affect the southern region until October 28. The rainfall could cause further flash floods and landslides.
Flooding has affected many parts of Thailand since mid-September. At least 83 people had been reported killed by October 26, according to the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation.
Flooding also hit the capital, Bangkok, in late September after several days of heavy rain. Thousands of people were forced to evacuate, and transport and other services were severely disrupted.
