CHICAGO, Illinois: CME Group has appointed company veteran Lynne Fitzpatrick as its next chief executive officer, making her the first woman to lead the world's largest derivatives marketplace and marking the end of Terry Duffy's long tenure at the top of the exchange operator.
The leadership transition comes as exchanges broaden their focus beyond traditional trading activities, investing in data services, software, and newer products such as prediction markets to diversify revenue streams and attract new investors.
CME said on June 17 that Fitzpatrick will succeed Duffy as CEO on March 1. Duffy will step down from the role and become executive chairman.
Shares of CME fell about 4 percent in morning trading following the announcement.
Fitzpatrick was promoted to president and chief financial officer in 2024 after serving as CFO since 2023 and deputy CFO since 2022. She joined CME in 2006 and has held several senior finance and leadership positions within the company.
She will also join CME's board when she assumes the role of chief executive.
Fitzpatrick becomes one of a small group of women leading major Wall Street firms, joining executives such as Citigroup CEO Jane Fraser and Nasdaq CEO Adena Friedman.
Analysts at Piper Sandler described Duffy as "legendary" but said the succession plan was not unexpected.
"While CEO Duffy is leaving BIG shoes to fill, we have a very high degree of confidence in CFO Fitzpatrick's ability to successfully lead CME in the post-Duffy era," the brokerage said.
Duffy played a central role in transforming CME from a floor-based trading exchange into a global electronic markets operator. He also oversaw the company's public listing in 2002, making CME the first U.S. exchange to go public.
Since then, the company's stock has gained more than 8,000 percent, helping lift its market value to roughly US$95 billion. CME recorded an average daily trading volume of 28.1 million contracts last year.
A prominent figure in the exchange industry, Duffy served as chairman from 2002 and has led CME for more than 25 years.
Among the milestones during his tenure were the 2007 merger with the Chicago Board of Trade, the industry's first major exchange merger, and the 2008 acquisition of the New York Mercantile Exchange.
RBC Capital Markets also highlighted the company's 2021 partnership with Google Cloud and its 2025 venture with FanDuel as notable achievements under Duffy's leadership.
Duffy became executive chairman in 2006, added the title of president in 2012, and assumed the combined role of chairman and CEO in 2016.
"CME Group has grown from a Chicago institution to a true global powerhouse, all while generating billions in daily efficiencies for market users globally," he said in a statement.
Under Duffy, CME strengthened its position as the world's leading derivatives exchange, with its markets playing a key role in global price discovery and risk management for energy producers, farmers, manufacturers, and investors.
