Discomfort in her right hip prompted World No. 2 Elena Rybakina to withdraw from the Bad Homburg Open on Friday.
Rybakina's decision to remove herself from the upcoming WTA 500 grass-court tournament comes one day after her unexpected ouster from the Berlin Tennis Open. It also comes with Wimbledon looming on the horizon (June 29-July 12).
'Unfortunately, I have to withdraw from Bad Homburg due to some discomfort in my right hip,' the 27-year-old said in a statement. 'I need to consult with my medical team and undergo further assessment before making any decisions about the next steps.'
Wild card Alexandra Eala, from the Philippines, recorded a 7-5, 6-4 win over Rybakina on Thursday to advance to the quarterfinals in Berlin.
A two-time Grand Slam champion, Rybakina captured the Wimbledon title in 2022. She also won the Australian Open earlier this year.
