The Milwaukee Brewers and St. Louis Cardinals will play a day-night doubleheader Tuesday, with the host Cardinals looking to cool off the National League Central leaders.
Milwaukee rallied for a 4-3 win in the opener of the five-game series, its sixth victory in eight games.
Brewers ace Jacob Misiorowski (9-4, 1.47 ERA) is set to start the afternoon game. The right-hander, who was named to the All-Star team but may not pitch due to scheduling, is coming off his worst outing of the year. He gave up five runs, although only one was earned, in five innings last Thursday to the Cincinnati Reds in a 7-2 loss.
In his first full season, Misiorowski leads the majors in ERA, strikeouts (156) and WHIP (0.78). He already recorded a win against the Cardinals this year. He allowed a run on two hits and a walk in seven innings to go with 12 strikeouts in the Brewers' 5-1 victory on May 25.
In four starts against the Cardinals, Misiorowski owns a 2-1 record with a 3.05 ERA, along with 24 strikeouts in 20 2/3 innings.
Right-hander Michael McGreevy (3-7, 3.12) will get the nod to start one of the doubleheader games for the Cardinals although it's unclear whether it's Game 1 or Game 2. He allowed two runs on three hits in six innings with three strikeouts last time out in a 5-1 loss to the Atlanta Braves on July 1.
McGreevy's last win was back on May 8, when he surrendered no runs and one hit in six innings in a victory over the San Diego Padres. He struck out a season-high nine in the win.
McGreevy faced Milwaukee for the first and only time on May 26. He suffered the loss in the 6-0 game as the Brewers tagged him for five runs on seven hits and three walks in four innings, although he did strike out six.
The Brewers and Cardinals still have to announce one starter for Tuesday.
Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol said after Monday's loss that he's been forced to juggle the bullpen to ensure the team had relievers available for the twin bill. The Brewers scored all four runs against St. Louis relievers Justin Bruihl (one run) and Ryan Fernandez (three runs, two earned) on Monday.
'We know it's going to be tough with where our pitching is at,' Marmol said.
Offensively, the two teams have second basemen who are putting up solid numbers, although neither was named to the National League All-Star Team.
Milwaukee's Brice Turang ranks third among second basemen with 53 RBIs. He has a nine-game hitting streak, which he extended Monday with a game-winning two-run single.
JJ Wetherholt, the Cardinals' leadoff hitter, has 13 home runs, fourth among second basemen.
Brewers third baseman David Hamilton left Monday's game when he felt tightness in his left hamstring muscle after hitting a two-run double in the seventh inning.
'As hamstrings go, they usually take a little time (to heal),' Milwaukee manager Pat Murphy said.
