Jakarta [Indonesia], July 7 (ANI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday underlined that India and Indonesia shared the same steadfast commitment against terrorism and thanked the Indonesian leadership for support during the Pahalgam terror attack. Further in his address to the Indonesian Parliament today, the Indian Prime Minister also underlined the need for urgent reforms of the UN Security Council in a rapidly evolving global order.
Addressing a joint session of the Indonesian Parliament, the Kompleks Parlemen Republik Indonesia, PM Modi said, 'On matters such as terrorism, India and Indonesia have had one unequivocal vision. Last year during the dastardly terror attack in Pahalgam, Indonesia stood firmly with India in that moment. I express my gratitude to President Prabowo and all of you.'
Both countries are working closely to counter terrorism through the Joint Working Group mechanism, he said.
'Intelligence, cyber threats, terror funding and deradicalisation- by increasing our cooperation in these areas, we can strengthen the pacifist forces in the world,' PM Modi said.
He reaffirmed India's commitment to a free, open and inclusive Indo-Pacific and stressed the importance of ensuring freedom of navigation in the region.
Noting how the global order is rapidly evolving in the current day and age, Prime Minister Modi said that countries like India and Indonesia are seeking equal participation and a significant role.
'In this global landscape, India firmly believes that reform of the UNSC can no longer be delayed,' he said.
In his remarks, he underlined the longstanding partnership between India and Indonesia and said, 'Both our nations gained independence around the same time: Indonesia in 1945 and India in 1947. When it came to sovereignty as independent nations, India became a strong voice in support of Indonesia's independence movement at the United Nations. The role played by the respected Biju Patnaik during that period- the way he safely brought Prime Minister Sutan Sjahrir and Vice President Mohammad Hatta to India brought the two nations closer.'
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is on a three-day visit to Indonesia.
Earlier today, he held talks with President Prabowo Subianto and reviewed the entire gamut of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership encompassing trade and investment, defence and security, maritime cooperation, digital and financial technology, energy, healthcare and pharmaceuticals, space, critical minerals and rare earths, culture, tourism, agriculture and people-to-people exchanges.
The two leaders welcomed the launch of Indonesia Open Network (ION) based on Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC) of India. To mark the centenary of Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore's visit to Indonesia in 2027, Prime Minister Modi announced that the two countries would jointly celebrate the occasion as 'Tagore-Dewantara Year for Cultural and Educational Diplomacy', the Ministry of External Affairs said in a statement.
